He is probably one of the most prolific record releasers.
He has also probably recorded with more artists than anyone else.
There is however an new album release from him that should have been recorded around thirty years ago.
If you’re a western swing fan then it will be a long waited addition to your record library.
Hot on the heels of his Glastonbury appearance (say no more) Willie Nelson releases ‘Willie and The Wheel’ a concept which was thought up some thirty year ago by music man Jerry Wexler when Willie was on the Atlantic record label.
Before the record could be made however Willie left Atlantic and moved to CBS records so inevitably the idea was shelved.
Wexler died two years ago and prior to his death he sent a list of songs to Ray Benson that he thought would make a great western swing album fronted by Willie.
Ray Benson being the front man of ’Asleep At The Wheel’ one of the greatest modern western swing bands to emerge from the States.
In total it is a time piece for western swing and takes the listener through a variety of classics including ‘Hesitation Blues’, ‘Shame On You’, ‘Corinne Corrina’, ‘I’m Sitting On Top Of The World’ and a whole host more.
If you were already a fan of the sounds of a bygone age from the like of Bob Wills, Milton Brown, and Cliff Bruner, then the combination of Willie Nelson and the Asleep At The Wheel band will put you on seventh heaven.
From the opening notes to the last fade it is sheer musical brilliance.
The only problem you will have is trying to keep your feet still.
