As usual there’s an eclectic mix of good music on today’s show.
I’ll be taking a look at the ups and downs of the Billboard Hot Country Songs Charts and finding out which country artists have had birthdays this week.
Our Album of the Week has caused me some confusion insomuch that it’s a brilliant musical offering but I find myself asking the question ‘Why’…you’ll find out what I mean by joining me.
Our Take You Back Track Number One takes us back to 1987 and a song that stayed at the top of the charts for three weeks.
There’s also songs from THe Dixie Chicks, Elvis Presley, Rhonda Vincent, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Toby Keith, Rodney Crowell and a whole host more.
It’ll be great to have a chat with you.
Cheers
Brian C

Just a follow-up comment re Lionel Ritchie’s Tuskegee. I do quite like it in a sort of genre-less way but I’m not sure how fans would take to him being Male Vocalist or Entertainer of the Year @ the CMAs. I seem to remember Olivia Newton John being called Oliver John Newton by Roy Acuff; and Charlie Rich burning John Denver’s announcemant card on stage after announcing him as winner. Could be interesting!
Hi Brian
I felt the same as you regarding Lionel Richie TUSKEGEE album.
The only track for me of note is the Little Big Town collaboration where their harmonies really add something and make it country.
Because I’m so familiar with orginals which were all brilliant you have to compare. They sound watered down and make no impression on me. His duet with Jennifer Nettles is forgetable. A new to you Richie album might work with new listeners not past fans.
As Lionel’s last solo album didn’t sell I wonder if he looked at the “Darius Rucker Model” who jumped from Hootie & the Blowfish to country and named his album after his hometown!
TUSKEGEE has been certified platinum and has actually sold to date 862,000 copies in America.
With Scotty McCreery one of very few who can now sell a million will we see Scotty and Lionel going head-to-head for the 2012 CMA Male Vocalist! Wouldn’t that be a turn up!
I’m rushing off to a birthday party (90th, not mine!) this afternoon so I’m just up to Rodney Crowell but I’ll catch up with you tomorrow! I know this is contrary to my usual line but I really like Lionel Richie’s Tuskegee album. Always thought he had a very similar voice to Kenny Rodgers especially on the original of Sweet River Woman which, I am sure, was a Country hit shared with Alabama. And Country radio in the US seem to have accepted it. I think it got to No. 1 on the Billboard Country chart. I have to confess I thought it was more Country than most of the other current Country chart stuff! The answer to why they put it out is simple – @ least 3 audiences: easy listening, Country, pop/soul. I reckon he’ll have made his production costs back by now!
Cheers, Mike (& Kath who isn’t actually here but I’m sure she’d agree with me!)
